Art and Design

Art and Design

Shoreham is a village that is rich in art history as it was home to Victorian painter Samuel Palmer who also had a School of Fine Art in the village. At Shoreham Village School, we will ensure that pupils will receive a high-quality art and design education that will engage, inspire and challenge them, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They will also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, especially that of Shoreham village, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity and we will inspire pupils to enjoy and create art in its many forms.

The curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Pupils begin their Art and Design journey with us during the Early Years Foundation Stage and the starting point of our curriculum design includes the area for learning development of 'Expressive Arts and Design'.  The curriculum we deliver in Reception lays the foundations for the learning that will take place in subsequent years.
